About Us
SRA is a charter public school within Albany County School District #1. A charter school is a public school operated by a group of parents, teachers, and/or community board members as a semi- autonomous school of choice within a school district. The school operates under a contract or "charter" between the members of the charter school community and the local board of education. As a public school, SRA receives state funds and must follow state and federal law for public schools.
In January 2000, the Albany School Board (#1) voted to support a "school of choice" proposed by a task force that had worked for two years on the topic. The vote was conditional upon the availability of governmental funding. In April 2000, the School Board concluded that funding was not available, the the school of choice was not to be established. The parents (a.k.a. Wyoming Citizens for Educational Choice) who had worked on this effort decided to pursue the creation of a charter school embodying the same academic vision, curriculum and teaching philosophy as originally approved by the Albany County School Board. Our charter was approved by the Albany County School Board on December 12, 2001. We are now in our sixth year of successful operation.
We believe that SRA will improve the school district as a whole by introducing healthy competition and becoming a model for parental involvement. Parents and taxpayers who are the consumers of public education will benefit through increased accountability and educational choice. Teachers who teach at this will be there because they believe in the philosophy and will benefit by fact that they will be surrounded by teachers and parents who share their beliefs. Businesses and individuals who are looking to relocate to Albany County are increasingly exposed to the benefits of charter schools across the nation. Having a charter school in Albany County will act as a draw to them, thus benefiting out community as a whole.
By virtue of the fact that the University of Wyoming is an integral part of our community, Laramie is seen by many as a leader among Wyoming cities in many areas. Please join us in becoming leaders in public education by volunteering your time at SRA.
